Ramsina: A New East Syriac Font

We are pleased to announce the release of Ramsina, a new font for the East Syriac style of the Syriac script. Ramsina is a carefully executed revival of a metal typeface originally cut in India around 1920, preserving its historical character while meeting contemporary typographic standards. The original design, created by Esho Marcus and commonly known as East Syriac Marcus, has been extended with advanced OpenType features specified by Sargon Hasso.

The font was developed by the SIL Writing Systems Technology group, which undertook the technical implementation and substantial redesign work. Sparksoft Systems initiated and sponsored the project, providing technical requirements, OpenType specifications, historical research, and community-driven guidance that defined the scope and direction of the work.

Idiqlat: A New East Syriac Font

We are pleased to announce the release of Idiqlat, a new font for the East Syriac style of the Syriac script. Originally designed by Esho Marcus, the typeface has been thoughtfully renewed to support contemporary use across print, web, and mobile platforms, ensuring that a classic Syriac design remains accessible to today’s readers and writers.

Idiqlat is available in multiple weights—ExtraLight, Light, and Regular—to serve a broad range of publishing and educational needs. Its name, Idiqlat, derives from ancient Akkadian/Assyrian and means “Tigris River,” reflecting the deep historical roots of the script and its enduring cultural landscape.

The font fully supports the Unicode character set required for East Syriac and incorporates modern OpenType capabilities specified by Sargon Hasso. Idiqlat is based on the historic East Syriac Marcus typeface originally designed by Esho Marcus. While preserving the visual character and proportions of the original design, the font has been comprehensively reengineered to meet modern typographic requirements, including contemporary scaling conventions, multi-weight support, and reliable performance across print, web, and mobile environments.
